Dispelling two years of injury doubts, the Jamaican won three sprint gold medals this week for an overall world championship record of 11. The last of them came Saturday when he anchored the 4×100-meter relay team with free-flowing, giant strides that have made him an icon for the sport.

Behind him, the United States was far back in second place. But Justin Gatlin, who had been unbeaten in two seasons of sprinting, lost the chance for a third silver when the American team was disqualified for a bad exchange on the anchor leg.

Amata, Oke revive Nigeria’s medal hope
BEIJING 2015 IAAF World Championship 100m finalist, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor, says she owes nobody any explanation for her poor performance at the championship.

Okagbare, who was Nigeria’s medal hope in the championship, finished last in the 100m race and failed to show up for the 200m event on Wednesday.

Her decision to suddenly stay away from the 200m race did not go down well with some Nigerians back home, especially when the athlete had earlier showed up at the warm up area.

Nigeria’s medals hope dims in Beijing, as injury stops Okagbare in 200m

Team Nigeria’s hope of getting medals at the ongoing IAAF World Athletics Championship in Beijing, China, may have finally dimmed, as the country’s major hope, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor was forced to pull oput of the 200m race yesterday due to an hamstring injury.

After her failure in the 100m final on Monday, Okagbare’s hope for medal shifted to the 200m event, which began yesterday, but she was said to have developed hamstring injury during warm up, thereby dropping out from the heats.

Okagbare who went for surgery shortly before the All Nigeria Athletics Championships held in Warri, Delta State, was certified fit for the World Championships, but an official of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) told The Guardian from Beijing yesterday that her injury may have re-occurred due to ‘series of rounds’ she did in the 100m.

Team Nigeria head coach Gabriel Okon said: “Blessing was focus on the doing well in the 200m. Her warm up was okay but she developed hamstring injury.

After examination of the injury by the medical team, she was advised to rest the leg as running with the injury could aggravate it,” Okon said.

Usain Bolt beats Justin Gatlin by one hundredth of a second in 100m World Championship final

Despite running a comparatively modest time by his record-breaking standards, Bolt’s victory represented his greatest miracle in a career of many

It was far from Usain Bolt’s quickest time, but it was perhaps his finest hour. Just when his professional obituaries were being penned, the finest sprinter in history pounced to seize the world 100 metres gold from drugs cheat Justin Gatlin, the Frankenstein of athletics, in a gloriously unexpected heist. With cheers as loud as any heard in Beijing’s cavernous Bird’s Nest, thousands danced in honour of their Jamaican hero to a chorus of Bob Marley’s ‘One Love’. Never has a result felt more cathartic for an athlete or for a sport.

When it counted most, and with his reputation at stake, Bolt found the explosiveness that had eluded him all year, steadily reeling in Gatlin before pipping him at the line in a piece of transcendent sporting theatre to rival even his historic deeds here at the 2008 Olympics. All championships Gatlin had the look of the saboteur, the heir presumptive nobody wanted. The American had broken the 9.8-second barrier five times in one season, including in his semi-final here, but he faltered when it mattered most as Bolt hared through in 9.79, squeezing him out by one hundredth of a second.
